Mailing Lists
About This Page
This page allows you to read about the various mailing lists, subscribe to those that interest you, and to browse the archive of past postings for each list. The lists have been categorised as follows:
What is a mailing list?
Mailing lists are a great way of keeping in touch with what is happening in Australian Ultimate. Messages are sent to a central list and then distributed by email to all of the members of the list. An archive of all messages is stored for later reference.
These lists are administered automatically by a list server, which saves someone from having to collect and keep track of people's email addresses. For more information, see the Yahoo!Groups homepage, which hosts most of our lists.
Why should I join a list?
Some of the lists carry important announcements and news about leagues, tournaments etc. Being on the list will keep you informed. If you are an administrator, then you should join the appropriate admin lists. Other subscribers may just be interested in listening to the discussion and occasionally contributing ideas.
Most of the lists here are moderated/managed by ozultimate@hotmail.com. If you have any questions about any lists or their management, please contact the moderator.
Choose which lists you are interested in and subscribe to them. It is a simple matter to unsubscribe if the subject matter is uninteresting or you find you are getting too much mail.
To subscribe to a list, simply send a blank message to list-name-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
To remove your email address from a list, send a blank message to list-name-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.
You can also subscribe and unsubscribe by visiting the list home page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/list-name
As mentioned above, if the subject matter is uninteresting, you can simply unsubscribe from the group.
Alternatively, Yahoo!Groups archives all messages sent to it. By setting your mail delivery preference to "Read on the Web", you can read articles at your leisure without them clogging up your mailbox. Simply visit Yahoo!Groups, log in, select the relevant groups, and set the read mode to "Read it on the Web".
Announcement Lists
For announcements and general information in your local ultimate community.
Announcements which are considered relevant include:
- upcoming tournaments
- league announcements
- tournament reports
- league results
- lost and found
- social invitations
Golden Rule
You should never reply to someone else's message on the list. If you disagree with something that has been posted you should reply to the original poster.
Administration Lists
These administration lists are meant to keep administrators in touch with each other and replace self-maintained lists for distributing minutes and holding on-line
discussions.
Discussion which is considered relevant includes:
- meeting announcements
- minutes distribution
- policy discussion
- brainstorming
These groups are meant to act as continuous online meetings, avoiding the problems of having to wait for monthly meetings before discussing important issues.
Development Areas
These lists facilitate discussion in areas which are in need of attention in terms of injecting new ideas and developing new approaches to tackle problems in that area. The AFDA prefix indicates that the discussion is of an Australia-wide content. Broad discussion will expose everyone to the best ideas and solutions.

Newsgroups
Newsgroups are a more sophisticated form of electronic forum, where the subscribers may choose which messages they wish to download and read. Articles are organised into threads which gives the list structure.
An Australian newsgroup, aus.sport.frisbee, has recently been created.
To read it, set up the news reader for your browser to use your ISP's news server (they can tell you the address, usually news.isp.com.au) and subscribe to the group.
There are also some public news servers (NNTP servers) that anyone can use. To search for one that carries aus.sport.frisbee, try newzbot.
Some news servers do not currently carry the group, so you have to ask your ISP to carry the feed. The group is also available on the web from Google groups.
rec.sport.disc is the newsgroup for general discussion of disc sports worldwide. On this newsgroup you will find announcements of upcoming tournaments, discussion of rules and spirit, some discussion of tactics and plays and a fair amount of general chatter. Much of the content is North American, but enough is of general appeal.
